The
Hurricanes operate on a year round schedule. The year typically begins in August with a three-week
training camp. The team usually
participates in two pre-season tournaments to prepare for the regular
season in Division 1 of the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL) which
features the best soccer teams from Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the
District of Columbia. In September,
the Hurricanes begin the single elimination Virginia Youth Soccer
Association State Cup Tournament. Each
fall the Hurricanes also participate in the Virginia Beach Columbus Day
Tournament and the Bethesda Thanksgiving Tournament. Both of these tournaments are highly
rated and include strong teams from the eastern United States.
During the winter, the Hurricanes train indoors once a
week. In addition, the team participates in the Washington Area Futsal
League and plays futsal games on the weekends from mid-December through
early March. In addition, the
Hurricanes participate in the Futsal State Cup and play in one or more
local indoor tournaments.
The
Hurricanes resume outdoor training in late February and play in one or two
pre-season tournaments in preparation for the prestigious Jefferson Cup
which is held in late March in Richmond, Virginia, and is one of the most
highly rated tournaments in the nation.
Following Jefferson Cup, the Hurricanes resume competition with
weekly games in Division 1 of the NCSL which runs through early June. The team wraps up its year with another
premier tournament over the long Memorial Day weekend. Following the completion of the NCSL
Division 1 season, the Hurricanes hold open tryouts.
During the summer (mid-June to mid-August) team members
attend summer camps and clinics and enjoy
some non-soccer time.
During
the fall and spring seasons, the Hurricanes train on Mondays and Fridays
from 7 to 8:30 at one of several natural grass or artificial
turf fields in McLean which is located just off
Interstate 495 (the Beltway) in northern Virginia. In addition, as a member of the elite
McLean Premier Soccer (MPS) program, the
Hurricanes also train Wednesday evenings “under the lights” at
the Lewinsville Park #2 field (a brand new
state-of-the-art artificial turf field) with a cadre of nationally
recognized coaches and clinicians.
